Identify the Parts of an Article

When creating a citation for an article, there are more components that must be included than for a book. For many articles, these can be hard to identify. Each database presents this information in a different way; each print journal also displays the information in a different way. Learning to identify the components of the source you are using will help you to create your citation or to import these components into a citation generator.

So why is this important? Well, if you use a citation generator, such as the example below from Microsoft Word, you need to know how to transfer the parts of the source you are using to the areas you must fill out to create the citation. Also, you need to be aware of when the citation generator is misleading. Note below that the default box to create a citation in APA in Microsoft Word does not even contain all of the fields that are required. Relying only on this citation generator would result in an incorrect citation
