Information Literacy Toolbox for Faculty

Information Literacy and the Core Curriculum

Research skills need to be fostered within specific assignments and throughout a student's time at Neumann. We strongly encourage teaching research as a process, not as a single assignment.

You might observe that particular research or writing skills are lacking in your students' assignments.  These resources are designed to promote and measure Information Literacy within classes throughout the student's whole time at Neumann and across all disciplines. The ideas and tools can be used in any class that has a research or critical thinking assignment.

Use the steps and exercises below to work your students through the research process with their assignments.

Determine the Extent of Information Needed - Understand topic, conduct background research

Access the Needed Information - Find resources (articles, books, etc.) that support a topic/thesis

Evaluate Information and Its Sources Critically - Read, understand, and evaluate resources

Use Information Effectively to Accomplish a Specific Purpose - Effectively incorporate resources into a paper in a way that supports the thesis

Access and Use Information Ethically and Legally - Correctly cite resources in the paper and bibliography
